Frequently Asked Questions

needle felted dog sculpture

What materials are the dog sculptures made with?

Each dog is made of 100% wool fiber. Using the technique of needle felting, it is sculpted as one would sculpt clay. There is not any wire, thread or sewing involved.

What is needle felting?

Needle felting is a dry felting technique that requires a barbed needle to push and pull the fibers together to make a solid form. A finished dog sculpture has been poked with a barbed needle thousands of times.

How long does it take to make each sculpture?

The length of time it takes to make a commissioned sculpture portrait varies depending on the complexity of the dog's or cat's marking. On average a single sculpture takes around twenty hours to create from start to finish.

How long does it take to receive my order?

This depends on how many orders I have at the time you would like to place your order. I can work out an approximate date your order will be completed with you before you place your order. Feel free to contact me about the schedule. Wait time can be as fast as four weeks and as long as nine months so please be sure to ask if you need it for a special date. Once you pay a deposit on your commission, you will be officially added to the schedule. Your finish date will be an approximate date that I will do my best to stick to.

If you are planning on purchasing a sculpture for a 2011 Christmas gift, I would get your order in as soon as possible. Every year I book up very quickly as I am only able to complete two to three sculptures each week. If you are not able to get on the schedule for your desired date there is also the option of giving a gift certificate.

How much is shipping?

Shipping in the US via USPS Priority with insurance is $11.50 for one dog. Add $3.00 for each additional sculpture. If you prefer to have your package sent without insurance or via first class mail, you may request that and I will send you a quote for how much it will be based on your zip code. If you do chose to have your package shipped without insurance, you do so at your own risk. International shipping will be individually priced based on your country. I will send you a quote for insured and uninsured shipping to choose from.

How do the gift certificates work?

Gift certificates are a great way of ordering a commission for someone but allowing them to work with me and supply their own photos for my reference. They are also a great solution to not being able to have your commission completed by your desired date. Gift certificates are purchased for the full amount plus shipping and added to the production schedule. The recipient will receive a beautiful card with their name, their pet's name and your name along with full instructions of what I need to create their sculpture. Read more about gift certificates here.

Do you make portraits of other animals?

The majority of my sculpted portraits are of dog with cats being the second most requested. I have also made horses, rabbits and pigs, all of which you can view in my gallery.

Can I get a refund?

The 50% deposit is non-refundable should you decide not to collect your order. At the time of your order being completed I will send you photos for your approval. If there are any small changes you would like me to make I am happy to do so. Once your order is approved and your final payment is made it is not refundable. There can be exceptions to this rule and if you are not pleased for any reason, I will do my best to resolve the issue fairly.

What forms of payment are accepted?

At the time you place your order I will send you a Paypal invoice which you may pay with your Paypal account or with a Visa or Mastercard. You are also welcome to pay by check or money orders. You will be asked to pay a 50% deposit when you place your order and the final 50% and shipping at the completion of your order. Deposits must reach me with in 24 hours via Paypal or credit card or seven days by check when placing your order to hold you place on the schedule. Upon completion of your order the final payment including the cost of shipping will be due within 7 days from the time I contact you for your approval. Your order will then be shipped once your final payment is made.

What kind of photos do I need to send?

I ask that you send as many photos as needed to show your dog's/ cat's face, feet, tail and all markings. It is also very helpful to have at least one standing profile shot to help me understand the shape of your dog's body. I prefer that photos be sent via email to ameliamakesart@comcast.net but if you need to send hard copies do not send originals. I will return your photos with your sculpture but cannot be responsible for loss or damage that might occur in the mail. Once I receive your photos I will write to let you know if I have any questions or if I am all set to move ahead with your commission.
